The body of a Berbice woman was on Thursday morning pulled from a canal at Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD) after it was spotted by her son-in-law, who immediately contacted the Police.
The dead woman’s identity was later confirmed as 73-year-old Chandramattie Deonarine of Lot 192 Section C, Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice, but up to the time of her demise, she had stayed with a daughter who resides in Happy Acres, ECD.
The woman was reportedly ill, and stayed with her daughter so she could easily access treatment.
However, it was reported that sometime around 01:00h, being in a state of hallucination, the now dead woman ventured out of the home for an unknown destination.
The body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour to await a post-mortem. Speaking with Guyana Times, from Berbice, the daughter with whom Deonarine stayed explained that she last saw her mother about 01:00h during a prayer session.
The distraught daughter further stated that she left her mother lying on the bed and she went back to her room. Just about 01:10h, she recalled her mother enquiring of the time and she told her.
About 05:10h, when she woke up, she discovered that the elderly woman was not in her room; upon checking, she realised that the front door was open.
“Right away, we thought that she left home, so we went to the police station to find out if anyone found her wandering, but she was not there… My husband went to the Georgetown Hospital and she was not there.” the woman stated.
She noted that as her husband was returning from the hospital, he stopped at several locations along the way to check for her mother, but the ill woman was nowhere in sight.
It was while driving in the direction of his home that he stopped at an intersection and looked into the trench and saw the woman’s body. The Police have since confirmed that there were no marks of violence on the body.
The woman leaves to mourn her six children, siblings, and several grandchildren.
