Bonasika family seeking assistance to rebuild home destroyed by fire

A Bonasika Island, Lower Essequibo River family whose home was ravaged by fire on December 30, 2021, is seeking the public’s assistance to rebuild in order to provide a better shelter for their children.

The house that was destroyed by fire

Joshua Gill, the head of the family, told Guyana Times that his wife and six children have been staying at a relative’s vacant house in the area and they have been receiving assistance from residents and organisations.
“We’re currently staying at one of my relatives’ empty houses and whatever the people bring and give us, we’re accepting. We’re asking the public that whatever they give to help us build back a house, we will accept,” Gill said.
Gill explained that he and his wife would usually farm so as to provide for their children. He added that the day before Old Year’s Day, he and his family went home after a rough day at work and saw their house had turned to ashes.
“When we went home, we could drop on our knees and cry, everything inside the house was destroyed… Our foodstuff, clothes and household items were all ashes,” he recalled.
