Bourda drug bust: Bent St man jailed for 4 years, fined $2.3M
A man who investigators said was stopped with parcels containing $600,000 in marijuana has pleaded guilty to a trafficking in narcotics charge.
Akeem Henry, 25, of Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday. He admitted to having 2.65 kilograms (five pounds) of marijuana in his possession on June 14. In the end, Henry was sentenced to four years in prison along with a fine of $2.3 million. His co-accused, Ryan Marks, 27, of no fixed place of abode, was remanded to prison after denying the charge.
His case will be called again on July 20.
On the day in question, Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers conducted an operation at Orange Walk, Georgetown in the vicinity of Bourda Market and intercepted the men with a bag
containing “brick-like” parcels of suspected cannabis. As a result, they were both arrested and
escorted to CANU headquarters with the substance, which was later tested and confirmed to be cannabis.
The prior day, CANU and Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officers during a joint operation at Number 79 Village, Corriverton, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), intercepted a vehicle in which they found parcels containing ecstasy pills. The discovery of the illegal substance led to the arrest of Christopher Dexter Garraway, 49, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown. The four parcels contained 400 pinkish pills, which weighed 150.7 grams. Garraway is scheduled to appear in court today. Reports indicate that in 2020, Garraway was charged with trafficking $6.5 million in cocaine. While he was found not guilty, another man was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison and fined $19.7 million. (G1)
