unsanitary state.

According to vendors who ply their trade near the drain, the sewage system would overflow into the gutters emitting an unpleasant stench, which served as a major hindrance towards their businesses since shoppers find the scent repulsive and opt to stay away from the area.

Other vendors told Guyana Times that when there was heavy rain, the drain would overflow unto the walkway and even human faeces would be seen in front of the business stalls.

“The place dutty and stink. People don’t wanna come round here. See that drain adeh? When rain fall hard it does overflow and all the people s**t and p**s mix with the dutty water does flood the whole walkway,” one vendor said.

Many vendors highlighted that numerous complaints were made to the market’s office to no avail. They expressed their frustrations of having to earn their living in such unhygienic surroundings.

“We don’t get sale. Now it even worse. The conditions get worse and we deh mo bad cause nobody don’t come round here no more. We fed up talk. It ain’t mek sense I talk cause they na gon do nothing. They does never do nothing. The other day one ah the man them come in here and tell me I only being pessimistic. I telling the man bout the drain condition and he telling me I only being pessimistic,” said one vendor who identified himself only as “Bald Head”.

Guyana Times was told that all of the other drains had been cleaned and dug recently; however, the drain to the western end of the Bourda Market was neglected because of the sewage system leaks into it.

“The people that went cleaning the drain, cleaning good good. Then they stop and we ask wham to this one and they said they ain’t going no way near shitty water. How they scorn and other nonsense. So wham, man? We ain’t scorn? Is we gotta deh in this every day.”
