Boys’ squash team added to Guyana’s Junior Pan Am Contingent

As the time nears for the first-ever staging of such an event, Guyana’s team for the Junior Pan American Games continues to grow, with the Junior’s Boys Squash team earning their tickets.

With the team qualifying for the multi-sport event, slated for November 25-December 5 in Cali, Colombia, the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) hosted a playoff at the home of Squash, the Georgetown Club, in order to identify a three-man team for the Pan American event.
The Junior Boys’ Squash team will comprise Shomari Wltshire, Michael Alphonso and Samuel Ince- Carvalhal.
Following strict COVID-19 guidelines, a small number of contenders battled for a spot to represent Guyana at the upcoming Cali games.

Squash star Shomari Wiltshire was exempt from the qualification process owing to his stellar reputation in the sport. As such, the teenager secured his spot “with previous outstanding performance and his consistent reign at the head of the Junior team”, a GSA statement revealed.

With the remaining two places to be filled, Ince-Carvalhal, Nicholas Verwey, Alphonso and Mohryan Baksh played a round-robin competition that concluded on Saturday morning with a clean sweep for Ince- Carvalhal, who won all three of his matches to earn his place in the junior squad. Meanwhile, Alphonso defeated Nicholas Verwey and Baksh, to fill the remaining spot.
Verwey battled valiantly against Ince- Carvalhal and Alphonso, pushing both matches to 5 setters, and young Baksh rallied well with the older boys in his, games.
In Saturday’s competition, Ince-Carvalhal overcame Baksh in their first match, 10-12, 11-2, 11-2 and 11-4. Alphonso then defeated Verwey 11-13, 13-11, 12-14, 11-3 and 11-4. Alphonso returned for his second victory, this time against Baksh in sets, 11-7, 11-4 and 11-6. Ince-Carvalhal continued to keep his slate clean with a hard- fought victory over Verwey 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 11-3 and 11-9.

Meanwhile, Verwey registered a win over Baksh in straight sets, 11-8, 11-2 and 11-5, while Ince-Carvalhal defeated Alphonso 11-5, 11-2, 11-3.
