Home Letters Brazen attempts to ignore President Jagan’s sterling achievements
Dear Editor,
So Guyana is going to have an Avenue of Honours to showcase the names of Guyanese who have made significant contributions to the country’s development.
If this monument is to be initiated and rolled out by the current Administration, we can expect – going from their past performance – that the honourees will be selected solely from among the PNC/APNU party faithful which will make it another blatantly partisan and racist exercise from which the majority of deserving Guyanese will find themselves excluded. The honourees will undoubtedly include those tainted by criminal convictions, those who have performed dishonourable and corrupt acts on behalf of the PNC/APNU, and even those who have contributed in great part to the country’s underdevelopment.
This will be another opportunity for Granger to showcase a jealousy that stems from his inability and abject failure to measure up to that heroic Guyanese – President Cheddi Jagan. He baulked at and halted the printing of commemorative stamps for President Jagan and omitted President Jagan from his list of Indian Guyanese stalwarts on Indian Arrival Day of all days.
Despite these open and brazen attempts to ignore President Jagan’s sterling achievements, Cheddi will always be remembered and honoured by fair-minded Guyanese as will all the Indian Guyanese who have contributed to this country’s development and who could well be omitted from this Government’s list of honourees.
It is part of Guyana’s abject failure as a nation that such partisanship is expected even before it is announced.
Sincerely,
Ryhaan Shah
