Brazilian fugitive recaptured by Guyanese lawmen

Members of the Guyana Police Force’s Mounted Branch stationed in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) on Wednesday arrested a Brazilian fugitive during a patrol in the Takutu River area.

escaped from a Brazilian prison with 99 others.
Based on reports received, during the patrol on Wednesday, the fugitive was seen acting in a suspicious manner upon seeing the ranks. He was detained for questioning and it was at that time he was positively identified.
Rodrigues at the time of his escape was serving a sentence for vehicular theft. He was handed over to law enforcement officials in Brazil.
Since the establishment of the Mounted Branch in Lethem in 2015, a number of persons have been arrested, charged and committed to prison for various offences, including trafficking and possession of narcotics and possession of ammunition.
The unit is currently headed by Superintendent Michael Sutton, who is supported by Corporal Fitzgerald Adolphus and several other ranks with years of experience in the mounted section of the Force.
