Brenessa Thompson continued her impressive season by once again lowering the national record in the women 200m. The first year student out of Texas A&M University clocked 22.99 seconds on Saturday May 28 to place 3rd in her race at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) West preliminaries in Lawerence, kansas. In the process she was the 20th fastest out of the 24 athletes to have qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) finals in Eugene, Oegon on June 8-11. Felecia Brown was the fastest qualifier, stopping the clock at 22.27.
Thompson who is set to represent Guyana in the 100 & 200 metres at the Rio Summer Olympic Games in Brazil, first reduced the 12 year old national record of 23.33 held by Aliann Pompey to 23.19 on May 12 of this year.
Aliyah Abrams was another athlete to show national pride on the track to celebrate the Jubilee Anniversary of Guyana’s Independence.
The South Carolina Freshman who recently qualified to represent Guyana at the Olympics placed 3rd in the 400 metres at the NCAA East quarter-finals in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday May 27. Her time of 52.30 seconds ensured that she qualified as the 9th fastest overall heading to the NCAA finals in Oregon. Courtney Okolo’s time of 51.06 was the fastest qualifying time for the finals.
