Bridge at Vreed-en-Hoop collapses after support system breached
Days before Christmas, when the Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara area is extremely busy, a large portion of the road collapsed on Tuesday due to unnatural causes.
In fact, it was later found out that a vagrant was living under the structure.
Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar via his social media page stated that works were initiated to fix the damages.
The structure was weakened after the man reportedly dug out sand and compromised the support system.
“It appears a man was living under the bridge who continues to dig out the sand from the side of the road, causing it to weaken and break away,” the Minister explained.
As a result of the regular traffic congestion on the Westside, immediate efforts were made to fix the breakage.
In 2018, the 30.7-kilometre road on the WCD from Vreed-en-Hoop to Hydronie was commissioned.
