Bring back… executions

The murder, beheading, and dismemberment of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran has brought back on the national agenda as to what we as a nation should do with those who commit these unspeakably heinous crimes!! This is a kid who should’ve been worrying about schoolwork and play, and maybe our best tribute to him can be delivering justice to him – which your Eyewitness thinks should be to hang the perpetrator once he’s convicted!!
Doesn’t matter whether it’s the Daady, the Mumma, or the Pujari – once the case is solved, it’s the gallows for them!! As such, President Irfaan Ali is right to support examining the APPLICATION of the death penalty – which is still on the books!! – for the most heinous crimes!! His instruction to the Attorney General has gotta be followed up pronto – certainly before the trial of the accused!! Here it’s the father, which would make the crime beyond “heinous”!!
Now any accused is entitled to a fair trial – with all the safeguards – to address all the usual objections, including that of a wrongful conviction!! But hey… Our death sentence must be proved beyond reasonable doubt – and this is the best we can do!! Sure, there’s the one in a million chance that an innocent person might be convicted – but we can’t throw out the baby with the bathwater, can we?? Justice for the life cruelly snuffed out!!
Then some will argue that executions don’t necessarily prevent other murders – but that got nothing to do with the SPECIFIC crime that has already been committed, innit?? Deterrence is just a distracting red herring!! Your Eyewitness rests in position on proportional punishment – rather than guaranteeing safer streets!!
Some argue that execution makes the state resemble the murderer – but hey…by the very definition of the state, we the people have given it the right to take lives based on the laws we’ve approved!! And here the punishment rests on public evidence, individual culpability and judicial restraint!! It’s not like cowboy justice!!
So what about human rights?? Well, we’d be upholding international standards that restrict capital punishment to the most serious crimes involving intentional killings!! Especially when the accused is assured of equal access to an effective defence – which also addresses objections on disparate wealth!!
Finally, the Govt has already recognised that punishment cannot substitute for protecting children before they’re harmed. They’re ratcheting up functioning child protection services, prompt investigation of abuse and practical support for endangered families. So Pressie’s position deserves support on the standards outlined by your Eyewitness – reserve hangings for the gravest intentional killings, enforce the strictest safeguards, and fulfil the daily duty to protect the vulnerable. This ain’t calling for lynch mobs!!
Our children deserve a country that also delivers justice to them!!

…absolute monarchy??
Today, your Eyewitness is all agog that King Charles and Queen Camilla are gonna be dropping in on ole Mudland, which his forebears ruled since 1815, when we were actually three separate countries!! Imagine the KING dropping by when, back in the day, even big-time planters like Gladstone – whose son was the Prime Minister of Britain – NEVER set foot in a country where they made billions in today’s money off our sweat and blood!!
So can you blame the folks who’ve been pushing for reparative justice for getting excited – in light of the fact that the British Government paid the planters for their “loss of property” at emancipation – and not a penny for the “property” – who just happened to be human beings!! They feel the King can play a bigger role… and can at least apologise and recommend to the Government that they offer reparations.
He mightn’t be able to COMMAND them any longer like his forbears, but he still got the moral gravitas to recommend!!

…Eden?
He can’t come up with a single concrete development project for the country, but Sanction Man sure knows how to spend!! He’s called for a ONE HUNDRED PER CENT salary increase for Public Servants – without any rationalisation of the services they provide!!
