Britton, Sukhai claim national singles titles at GTTA Independence Tournament

Shemar Britton and Samara Sukhai emerged as the standout performers when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Independence Tournament concluded on Sunday at the National Gymnasium, with both players capturing the premier men’s and women’s singles titles respectively.
Britton secured the men’s singles crown after a series of impressive victories, culminating in a hard-fought 4-1 win over Jonathan Van Lange in the final. On the women’s side, Sukhai edged Nevaeh Clarkston 3-2 in a closely-contested championship match to secure the women’s singles title.

Britton advanced through a competitive draw, defeating Kayden Meusa in the quarter-finals and Elishaba Johnson in the semi-finals before overcoming Van Lange. Van Lange had booked his place in the final by defeating Niran Bissu in a seven-game semi-final encounter.
Sukhai enjoyed a strong run in the women’s singles competition, overcoming Angel Robinson in the semi-finals before prevailing against Clarkston in the title match. Clarkston reached the final with a straight-games victory over Fabianna John.
Several junior players also produced notable performances throughout the tournament. Kayden Meusa claimed the Under-15 boys’ singles championship after defeating Abraao Ferreira DeOliveira in the final. Meusa had earlier gotten the better of Vivek Bassoo in the semi-finals.

Samara Sukhai captured the women’s singles crown

The open categories also featured several competitive contests. Colin Wong captured the B-Class Open Singles title following a dramatic five-game final victory over Malachi Moore. In the C-Class Open Singles division, Yeudistir Persaud defeated Shurwain Sahadeo to lift the championship trophy.
The doubles competitions produced a mix of experienced and emerging talent. Sukhai teamed up with S Damon to win the women’s doubles title, while Colin France and Clarkston combined to secure the mixed doubles championship.
The tournament formed part of Guyana’s Independence celebrations and attracted players from various clubs and age groups, providing a platform for both established competitors and developing talents to showcase their abilities.
