Brothers allegedly doused with hot oil in Berbice

More than one week after two brothers were allegedly burnt with hot oil, they remain hospitalised.
The incident reportedly occurred at Murphy Dam, Rosignol, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) on October 11.
The injured men are 30-year-old Urawle Fordyce and his 24-year-old brother, Jason. They received third-degree burns about their bodies.
Based on reports received, on the day in question, Urawle and some villagers had an altercation, which quickly turned violent. Guyana Times was unable to ascertain what led to the fight.
The two men’s sister, Karen, who was not at the scene when the incident occurred, related that her mother was summoned to the scene where there was an altercation between Jason and some villagers.
“She go through the street to go to the people which they were having a problem with her son. She asked them, ‘What is going on? What happen? What is the problem?’ She was standing on the bridge leading to the grandmother of the people and while she was talking to her, the people came out with things in pot and cup. Her sons were there waiting for her to find out what was going on and they pour oil on them,” Karen related.
She said as far as she was aware there was no ongoing feud with the family. As a matter of fact, she referred to the relationship between the two families as a good one.
“As a matter of fact, my mother buys greens from them. My mother grew up with one of them; we never had a problem with them,” Karen related.
Meanwhile, Jason told this publication on Thursday that he was burnt while trying to enquire about the issue between his brother and the villagers in question.
“We go to see what going on with we brother and the guys just throw the hot oil on we – the man (name withheld) and he nephew,” the injured man explained.
Guyana Times understands that a third person also received burns to his leg while a fourth person was also treated at the hospital for other injuries and sent away.
The men who committed the act were placed on $10,000 bail. The Fordyce family is calling for justice and does not believe that the Police are treating the incident with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.
