Burglar arrested after breaking into, stealing from church

One man is in Police custody after he allegedly broke into a church at Number 53 Village on Friday evening and stole several items.
He was reportedly arrested after he was seen with a bulky bag filled with items that he could not have given an account for.

On Saturday, Pastor of Union Village Harvest Assemblies visited the Number 51 Police Station and reported that the place of worship was burglarised. At that point, he was informed of the arrest and the recovery of the stolen items.
According to Pastor Welch, the building was secured with all the electric lights turned off but whilst in the area on Saturday he realised that the bulbs were alight.
He said upon investigating, he discovered that the stage was ransacked. According to him, a laptop computer, a drop cord, and small electrical items were missing.
The pastor related that the perpetrator gained access to the building by climbing onto the roof and going through a small opening between the rafter and the zinc sheet. He said it would appear that the intruder tried to break the lock on the door from the inside but failed.
“The hammer he used broke and he left the handle in the church.” At the time of his arrest, he was carrying the hammer without the handle.
Welch is of the belief that the perpetrator was attempting to remove more items from the church but because he could not get the door open and had to leave the same way he entered, he could have only taken small items.
Several items in the building were also damaged. The laptop computer was donated to the church by Godin Harbhajan in August.
Harbhajan has noted the increase in breakages and robberies on the Upper Corentyne.
Only Sunday Police said that a 35-year-old labourer of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice was in custody assisting with their investigations of an alleged armed robbery committed on a businesswoman at Number 59 Village, Corentyne.
The robbery reportedly occurred on Saturday evening.
