Burnt remains of missing Canadian found in Berbice

…killed over rice field dispute

A man has been taken into Police custody and has since confessed that he killed missing Canadian, Nicholas Jaipaul, over a rice field dispute between the man’s grandfather and another rice farmer.

Dead: Nicholas Ramkissoon Jaipaul

The charred remains of the 23-year-old were found at Moleson Creek, about 55 miles from New Amsterdam in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Jaipaul went missing from the Number 69 Village, Corentyne home of his grandfather where he was staying since arriving in Guyana. His grandfather, after whom he was named, received a phone call on Monday stating that his grandson was kidnapped. He contacted Police who went to his home. Police said that there was no forced entry but family members insisted that he was abducted. However, following initial investigations, Police arrested the two maids who worked for Jaipaul’s grandfather and the son of one of the maids. The son of one of the maids admitted to Police that the young man was murdered as revenge against his grandfather, who has an ongoing court matter with “Brickhead”, a rice farmer who cultivates land he rents from the senior Jaipaul. Guyana Times understands that after Police interrogated the maid’s son, he told them that he was hired to carry out the act. He subsequently led them to Moleson Creek, where the charred remains were discovered in an open spot behind the thick overgrowth lining the lonely roadway.

Police removing the charred remains

Meanwhile, Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh was taken to the site on Thursday afternoon and performed an autopsy. There were just a few bones and a part of the skull that remained. It was the dead man’s uncle who was able to identify the body based on an injury the lad had previously received. The uncle, Adit Narine Persaud, explained that Nicholas had undergone a surgical procedure as a baby during which his skull was infiltrated to get a tube to his brain to take fluid to his kidney. The scars were still evident on the skull.
The maid’s son remains in custody as Police continue their probe to locate the mastermind.
Meanwhile, Persaud said that the suspect had tried to befriend his nephew and went to the home he was staying the day before he disappeared and engaged him in conversation.
The suspect, several years ago, was fingered in the death of his stepfather. He was placed before the court for murder but was subsequently acquitted. (G4)
