A minibus carrying 11 Guyanese passengers, including two children, plunged into a trench in Nickerie, Suriname, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The accident occurred around 13:30h (Suriname time) on Wednesday in West Nickerie on the Adron Road in Europolder.
Guyana Times understands that the bus was heading towards Paramaribo and it attempted to overtake a car during which time the driver lost control and the car landed in the trench.
According to information reaching this newspaper, the bus was reportedly speeding at the time.
The traumatised mud-covered passengers were pulled from the vehicle by public-spirited persons, who had jumped into the trench to rescue the victims.
Eyewitnesses say that the trapped passengers could be heard screaming from inside the vehicle that was toppled on its side in the trench.
While the passengers were being rescued, the matter was reported and an ambulance arrived on the scene shortly after to transport the victims to the hospital, where seven of them were treated and sent away, while four were admitted for further observation. They are said to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle is assisting Police in the neighbouring country with further investigations.
