Businessman charged for assaulting peace officers

A businessman was on Monday slapped with several assault and disorderly behaviour charges when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Joseph McCallmon of Lot 33 Parsik, Beterverwagting East Coast Demerara, stood before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus where he pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
Police stated that on May 31, 2019, at Lot 9 Lacytown, Georgetown, he resisted arrest from a Police Constable. It was further alleged that he called Gavin Brown a name in order to annoy him.
McCallmon was also charged for unlawfully assaulting Police Constable Daniel Collin who was executing his duty.
The other charge stated that on the same day and location, he behaved in a disorderly manner and unlawfully assaulted Jason Price, a peace officer acting on duties.
However, Prosecutor Adduni Innis did not object to bail.
McCallmon was placed on $20,000 bail for each assault charge. He was, however, released on his own recognisance on the other charges.
