Buxton fire leaves several homeless, another house scorched

A fire of unknown cause at Buxton Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Sunday left at least eight persons homeless.
The fire, which reportedly started at about 12:00h, swept through the two-storey wooden property located at Lot 46 Buxton Railway Embankment, ECD. The fire also partially destroyed another building.

The house that was destroyed by fire

When Guyana Times arrived on the scene, the persons who had occupied the now ruined house were not at the scene.
Nevertheless, the owner of the second building that was destroyed during the blaze stated that she was taking a bath at about 12:00h when she heard her daughter who was in the upper flat of her home, screaming for “Fire! Fire!”.
The woman said she immediately ran out of the bathroom, into her bedroom, put on a dress, grabbed her “important documents”, and exited the building.
“I know my house old, and it is wood, and as soon as I see it start catching, I grabbed my valuables and came out,” she said.

The second building that was scorched

According to the victim’s neighbour, when she safely arrived on the road, she saw fire emanating from the upper flat of her neighbour’s home.
This publication was told that the home which was destroyed by the inferno was owned by a 73-year-old woman who has been living on the property for over half a century.
Guyana Times was informed that at the time of the fire, the elderly woman, her niece who takes care of her, the niece’s children including three-year-old twins, were at home.
No one was reported injured, since they all managed to escape before the entire structure erupted in flames. At the bottom flat of the building housed a grocery shop and a car wash.
The occupants were unable to save any household items. The cause and origin of the fire are still to be determined as firefighters launched a probe.
