A resident of Beterverwagting (BV), East Coast Demerara who was charged with cultivating cannabis plants has been fined $25,000 and ordered to do six months of community service at the BV Police Station after pleading guilty to the offence before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Michael Clarke Osafo Kasy, 42, was charged with cultivating a prohibited plant, contrary to section 8 (1)(a)(I) of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
The Police have said that Kasy, who is unemployed, was arrested on Monday at around 15:00h after ranks swooped down on his home at Quamina Road, Beterverwagting and conducted a cordon-and-search search exercise that unearthed two plant pots containing four green plants which had leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The tallest plant measured about three feet three inches in height.
The Police have further said that the man admitted to owning the plants, claiming that it was for his personal use. He was arrested and placed in custody, while the prohibited plants were lodged at the station. (G1)
