Cabinet gives green light to over $1B in contracts

GenericCabinet on December 30 gave its no objection to a number of contracts amounting to over a billion dollars
These contracts have been given the go-ahead even as the Public Procurement Commission (PPC) has been recently established.
Government on Tuesday said that some 5,414,217 has been allocated for a new office for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); ,928,737 for the construction of a community centre ground and pavilion at Baracara, Canje River, Region Six, and 0,943,800 for the upgrade of the electrical system, supply and installation of generator and CCTV cameras at the Camp Street Prison among others.table
Back in August 2016, Government appointed a five-member Commission, with the objective of having them take the brunt of the work off the shoulders of Government Ministers.
Among the PPC’s key functions, according to the Procurement Act, are to “Monitor and review the functioning of all procurement systems to ensure that they are in accordance with law and such policy guidelines as may be determined by the National Assembly; promote awareness of the rules, procedures and special requirements of the procurement process among suppliers, constructors and public bodies; safeguard the national interest in public procurement matters, having due regard to any international obligations; monitor the performance of procurement bodes with respect to adherence to regulations and efficiency in procuring goods and services and execution of works; approve of procedures for public procurement, disseminate rules and procedures for public procurement; and recommend modifications thereto to the public procurement entities.
