Cambio dealer shot, robbed

A cambio dealer is currently battling for his life at the Woodlands Hospital after he was shot to his abdomen Tuesday morning by a lone gunman at the Georgetown/Vreed-en-Hoop Ferry Stelling.
The victim has been identified as Mahendra Deonarine, 40, of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The incident occurred around 09:30h on Tuesday during the rush hour.
According to reports reaching Guyana Times, the man was returning home after transacting business when he was attacked.
Reports are that the man was carrying a bag with a quantity of cash when the perpetrator walked up to him, whipped out a gun and shot him before carting off the bag.
An eyewitness told this publication that the victim was just about to step from the Stelling to catch a boat to Vreed-en-Hoop when the incident occurred.
She explained that the perpetrator casually walked up to Deonarine and asked him for the bag, but the man did not comply.
“After the man refused to give him the bag, he just took out the gun, shoot the man, pick up the bag and ran away,” the woman related.
Reports are that the man was assisted by public-spirited persons and was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital.
Policemen who were in the vicinity gave chase, but were unsuccessful in nabbing the perpetrator.
According to other eyewitnesses, the entire incident took less than a minute to unfold. They, however, could not give describe the man, who they said had his cap in his face.
When this publication visited the victim’s distraught family members, they were in shock. Deonarine’s mother confirmed that the father of four underwent surgery to have the bullet removed.
