Campbellville cocaine bust: One pleads guilty, jailed for 3 years, fined $3.1M

…alleged accomplice remanded

One of the two men who were arrested following a $2 million cocaine bust at a house at Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Friday.
Eon Joseph, 33, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $3.1 million for the offence when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Joseph was jointly charged along with 60-year-old Andre Gomes called “Zipper”. Gomes, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on October 26, he had two kilogrammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
As such, he was remanded to prison until November 2.
The men were arrested after Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks swooped down on the house owned by Gomes and found the illicit drug.
Gomes had previously been charged with drug trafficking, but was never convicted.

The cocaine found by CANU at the house

Three years ago, Gomes was freed of a cocaine trafficking charge after it was found that insufficient evidence surrounded the case. Based on previous reports, back in 2018, Gomes was arrested in the same Campbellville area after CANU ranks had found just over two pounds of cocaine at a house.
He was arrested after a wanted bulletin was issued for him. Three years before that case, Gomes was arrested and charged for the shooting of a taxi driver outside Palm Court on Main Street, Georgetown. He was also freed of that charge because of insufficient evidence.

Community service
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Shamain Johnson of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of narcotics. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a month of community service along with a fine of $15,000.
The woman was also charged with the offence of placing prohibited articles for prisoners. To this charge, she also pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a fine of $26,000 or in default serve two months in prison. (G1)
