Canadian-based Guyanese Pilot busted with raw gold at CJIA

A 48-year-old Canadian-based Guyanese Pilot was taken into custody on Thursday following the discovery of a quantity of suspected raw gold at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri. According to reports received, on the day in question, at about 02:45h, Police and customs officials intercepted the outgoing passenger during screening procedures at CJIA.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspected raw gold was found in the luggage of a 48-year-old Pilot and Guyanese-born Canadian citizen, who was an outgoing passenger destined for Toronto, Canada. Upon the discovery, he was questioned about the relevant documents to export the mineral, but he responded in the negative. As such, he was detained, and the raw gold was weighed in his presence, amounting to 0.563 ounces. The suspected raw gold was subsequently taken for testing as investigations continue.
Back in March, over 15 ounces of raw gold were found during routine screening at the CJIA, Timehri, thus leading to the arrest of a Canadian couple.
It was reported that the raw gold was found concealed in the carry-on luggage of a 62-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman. Both individuals are Guyanese/Canadian citizens and were preparing to depart Guyana on a scheduled flight to Toronto, Canada. According to reports, customs officials intercepted the items during the screening process and immediately reported the matter.
The two passengers were subsequently detained for further processing. The gold was weighed in the presence of the couple and amounted to 15.521 ounces.
