Canadian teenager remanded

The 19-year-old who was on Tuesday busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) with a large quantity of cocaine, was on Friday remanded to prison after she appeared before the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetowncocaine Magistrates’ Courts.

Anastasia La Rose of Canada denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

It is alleged that on January 25, 2017, at the CJIA, she had in her possession 4.178 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

In court on Friday, Attorney Glenn Hanoman told the court that currently, his client suffers from a medical condition both physically and mentally, which makes her more persuasive and he petitioned for bail on those grounds.

However, bail was objected to by the prosecution, which told the court that the teen has no fixed local address and would prove to be a flight risk.

Bail was refused and La Rose is scheduled to make her next Court appearance on February 13.

Reports are La Rose was arrested after the cocaine was noticed in her luggage when it was passing through the scanner at the airport.

According to reports, ranks of the narcotics branch stationed at the airport arrested the woman, who was on a flight headed to Toronto, Canada.

She was found with four parcels of what was suspected to be cocaine in her suitcase.

The parcels were confiscated and weighed, and amounted to 4178 grams, as such, she was arrested and taken into custody.
