Canal Polder man dies in 3-vehicle collision in Bartica
A truck driver was pronounced dead at the Bartica Hospital moments after he was reportedly crushed by another lorry on Monday evening at Five Miles Potaro Road, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Dead is 31-year-old Deoraj Singh of Canal No 1 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD). Based on reports gathered, the accident occurred at about 21:15h and involved three trucks.
Police preliminary investigations revealed that on the day and time in question, the drivers of the three lorries had parked their vehicles at the side of the Five Miles roadway and went to a nearby house to consume alcohol.
However, after the drinking spree, the men returned to their respective trucks. At that time, they realised that motor lorry GNN 2121 driven by Singh was stuck in the sand.
After assessing the situation, the driver of another truck, GNN 5974, was successful in pulling out the stuck lorry with the use of a rope.
After being pulled out, Singh exited and stood in front of his vehicle. At this time, lorry GNN 5974 reversed and pinned him to his vehicle.
In addition, due to the impact, Singh’s truck went backwards and crashed into the third truck bearing registration number, GTT 226.
Singh sustained severe abrasions to his face and body and fell to the roadway in an unconscious state.
After some time, he was picked up and rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Singh’s body is presently at the said hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the driver involved in the accident, on seeing what took place, fled the scene while the driver of motor lorry GTT 226 was arrested and is assisting Police with their investigations.
A breathalyser test was conducted on him which proved that he was above the prescribed alcohol consumption limit.
