Officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Wednesday unearthed in excess of 21 pounds of marijuana at the Charity Waterfront on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
CANU, in a statement, said the officers were acting on information received and conducted an operation at Charity Waterfront.
During the exercise, they observed a male with a bag acting suspiciously within the vicinity.
However, as officers approached the area, the suspect fled towards the Pomeroon River and managed to escape in a speedboat that proceeded in the northern direction.
Nevertheless, the officers subsequently carried out a search in the area where the man was seen, which led to the discovery of several bulky parcels of suspected cannabis.
The suspected narcotics was transported to CANU Headquarters, where it tested positive for cannabis “Creepy Weed”. CANU said the cannabis carried a total weight of approximately 9.6 kilogramme (about 21.16 lbs).
Investigations are ongoing.
