The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) in the wee hours of Tuesday interdicted a total of 94 kilograms (207 pounds) ganja at Number 68 Village, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

Wanted: Omesh Lakeram

Based on reports received, agents of the drug enforcement body had been staking out a location in Number 68 Village for a number of days. On the day in question around 04:00h, the agents observed about four individuals with flashlights emerging from a track a short distance from where they were hiding. In addition, they saw two lights on a vessel that was just approaching off the shoreline.
As the persons neared the location, they were intercepted by the officers who identified themselves and ordered them to stop, but the persons dropped the packages they were carrying and ran in different directions.
The agents attempted to pursue them, but owing to poor visibility, as a precautionary measure, they called off the pursuit. The CANU ranks returned to the spot where the items had been dropped and discovered four bags containing several parcels. The bags were transported to CANU’s headquarters, where a total of 80 parcels of marijuana weighing a total of 207 pounds were unearthed.
CANU has since issued a wanted bulletin for the arrest of 47-year-old Omesh Lakeram for questioning in relation to the bust.
