Dear Editor,
I saw the need to put forth my opinions on the current situation in Zeelugt and also reply to two letters previously published in the media. These letters were dominantly giving a vivid image of what the drug trade and usage is doing to the youths of this almost urban community.
It is indeed a fact that the movement and procurement of drugs are widely used in this community, predominantly by the youths within the ages of 15 to 25. It is sad that I must reiterate this despite that gruesome death of a 2-year-old on Saturday (also drug-related.) Editor, my views lie in the thought that if the drug problem can reach such a terrifying state in our country, what can we expect a few years down the line?
Right now, Zeelugt is in the limelight for drug usage on the latter road to Parika. I wish to add and support the fact that Police have not been doing a good job in their routine inspections. Innocent people live in fear of these miscreants who eventually partake in petty crimes.
I wish to let my letter serve as a call for the leader of CANU to properly address this problem in Zeelugt. It is not easy for this community to have innocent youths spoilt by the already bad bloods. Our youth are the future and I do not wish to see them damaged any further.
CANU needs to be launching an urgent investigation in conjunction with the police. We have youths breaking curfew hours and liming on the roads trying to sustain their desire for the most unholy of substances. I do not know the ring leaders who are currently supplying these items in this community, but I think CANU has the relevant knowledge and tools to deal with this situation. Please do this village an urgent favour.
The problem is escalating more and more due to the closure of schools and the amounts of youths being home are led astray in the art of drug purchasing, transporting and usage. These are not normal activities for the nation’s children. I do not wish to see the blood of our youths spilt for this nonsensical drug usage. Our nation has mourned enough.
In conclusion, CANU, please, I urge you to investigate this growing drug problem in my village. Most importantly, readers can just google “Zeelugt and drugs” and will be surprised at the amount of articles and stories that have been plaguing this community for the last 10 years.
Seeking humble assistance from the national body.
Sincerely,
Carter Finlayson
Youth who is concerned for the future
