Captain drowns after taking boat on “test” drive

Two days after 23-year-old Michael Saffee of Grove, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD), went missing, his lifeless body was discovered on Thursday.
At the time of the discovery, a wound was seen on his mouth and blood was oozing from his mouth and nostrils.
Police stated that on Tuesday, Saffee and the owner of the metal boat which was powered by a 48-horsepower Yamaha outboard engine went for a test drive in the Mahaicony River.
However, about one mile away from the Mahaicony stelling, the boat reportedly spun around and eventually capsized. As a result, both occupants fell overboard. The owner reportedly managed to swim to safety but Saffee was nowhere in sight.
Soon after, the owner was rescued by another boat that was passing. He was taken to the stelling at Central Mahaicony where he proceeded to the Mahaicony Police Station and made a report of the incident.
Police stated that the scene was visited by ranks who noticed the boat and engine which were submerged and tied to a tree trunk with a chain.
The boat along with the engine was then towed to the Mahaicony Police Station where it was lodged. Meanwhile, as a search continued for the missing man on Thursday, his body was found floating on the southern side of the Mahaicony River.
The body was taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway.
