Caricom day and US Independence Day

Dear Editor,
Today is the 49th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, creating what is known as Caricom – the Caribbean Community of which 15 countries are members, to promote trade and involve in cultural and sporting activities. It is a holiday in Guyana and most member countries. A three-day meeting is being held in Paramaribo in which Belize will hand over the chairmanship to the President of Suriname.
Today is also the 246th independence anniversary of the United States, known as 4th of July – a public holiday. Americans are celebrating the day with traditional barbecues and social gathering throughout the country. Despite the high costs of foodstuff and gasoline, Americans are celebrating the day in the usual traditional way.

Sincerely,
Oscar Ramjeet
