Guyana’s junior CARIFTA Games contingent delivered several strong performances at the “CARIFTA vs The Rest” meet, which concluded on Saturday at the National Track and Field Centre (NTFC), West Coast Demerara (WCD), providing a timely assessment ahead of the regional championships set for April 4-April 6 in Grenada.

Among the standout performers was sprint sensation Onesi Dunn, who won the boys’ 100 metres in 10.23 seconds. Gordon Thompson (10.63) and Malique Kendall (10.87) were also among the top finishers in the event.
In the girls’ 100 metres, Angel Jeffery placed second in 12.16 seconds behind Kenisha Phillips, who won the event in 11.85 seconds, while Savannah Adams finished third in 12.19 seconds.
The 400m events were won by Joanna Anthon (1:07.21) in the girls’ division and Quency Marks (50.90) in the boys’. Several CARIFTA-bound athletes, including Tishawn Easton and Malachi Austin, were expected to feature in the one-lap event and relays.
In the field, Yohance Bourne took top honours in the boys’ long jump with a leap of 7.25 metres, while CARIFTA selectee Jarel Campbell placed fourth with 6.75 metres. Kaidon Persaud, another member of the national team, secured third place in the javelin with a throw of 46.36 metres, as Leslain Baird won the event with 60.39 metres.
Distance action saw Odida Parkinson claim victory in the boys’ 5000 metres in 15:47.15, with Cleveland Thomas and Daniel Harvey completing the podium.
The relay events also provided encouraging signs, with the CARIFTA Under-20 team winning the boys’ 4×100 metres in 41.76 seconds, ahead of teams from the Guyana Defence Force and Police Progressive Youth Club.
The CARIFTA contingent is expected to depart from Guyana later this week.
