Carjacker sentenced to 18 months

A 21-year-old man will spend the next 18 months in prison after he confessed to stealing a Toyota Raum vehicle when he appeared before a city Magistrate on Wednesday.
Romario Henry, of Lot 12 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, admitted he stole the vehicle valued .6 million, belonging to Mahendra Dhanpaul.
However, after pleading guilty to the charge, Henry explained that Dhanpaul had lent him the vehicle. He explained that he borrowed the vehicle to help with his military training.
The accused also claimed that he was in the process of carry out investigations at Police stations across the country.
According to reports, on the day in question, Dhanpaul parked his vehicle on Middle Road, La Penitence, and left the key in the ignition, when Henry entered the car and drove off.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that a report was made to the Ruimveldt Police Station and a Police patrol intercepted the car which was being driven by Henry at Hunter Street, Albouystown.
He added that the carjacker was arrested and investigations carried out led to charges being instituted against him.
Jeffers stated that in a Police statement, Dhanpaul made it clear that he never Henry permission to take his car.
