Four new appointments were announced on Monday evening as the People’s Progressive Party Government seeks to strengthen its foreign affairs staffing.

Former Foreign Minister Carl Greenidge is now Government’s Advisor on Borders

Newly-appointed Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd said that former Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett has been appointed Guyana’s Ambassador to the United Nations. She will also take up the Chair of The Group of 77 (G77) and China. Additionally, former Foreign Minister Carl Greenidge will be the Government’s Advisor on Borders while Ambassador Audrey Waddell will be appointed Permanent Secretary.

Todd stated that former Minister of Natural Resources Robert Persaud will assume the role of Foreign Secretary.

Meanwhile, Minister Todd, during a virtual meeting with the Department of Public Information (DPI), following his announcement, said that Greenidge will remain as Advisor on Borders after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) matter concludes.
“He is passionate about sovereignty; he understands our issues, and he is going to give us much-needed guidance on how we further our agenda in terms of dealing with Venezuela and Suriname,” Todd said.

Minister Todd noted that the former Foreign Secretary is pleased to be on board to provide support and advice on border-related issues.
“He is very happy to remain on board and see this process through and continue to strengthen our advocacy on our territorial integrity.”

Minister Todd noted that former Minister Rodrigues-Birkett’s appointment is “vital” as her selection will add much value to Guyana’s participation at the UN level.
