The Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club are hosting a 44-mile road race on the West Demerara Corridor today, Sunday, August 22. The event is open to cyclists throughout the country, and will see various divisions taking centre stage.
This race, which is taking place in collaboration with David Persaud Investments Ltd of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, pedals off at 8:00hrs from Schoonord and proceeds to Bushy Park at Parika before returning to finish at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
According to the President of Carlton Wheelers, Hassan Mohamed, the race is being held in memory of the late Managing Director David Persaud, who played and captained North Cote second division for the Everest Cricket Club and also played and captained First Division Case Cup at a time when Everest was not one of the premier clubs.
Persaud was also one of the few captains to win two major trophies in a single year – the Case and Rothmans Cups.
Several cycling meets have been held this year, including the Independence Three-stage and the National Cycling Championships last month. According to Mohamed, this race is open to seniors, females, veterans and juniors. The first six overall finishers and the top three in the female, veteran and junior divisions would be awarded a prize.
The safe hosting of local cycling has continued in Guyana.
Meanwhile, on August 29, another big cycling event is billed for the outer circuit of the National Park. That lucrative 15-lap event is sponsored by Touche Kosmetics, and the winner of the open category would bag a cash prize of $60,000.
The Veterans under-50 and over-50 would ride for 10 laps, and each winner thereof would be rewarded with $40,000. Top female, junior and juvenile riders would each be rewarded with $40,000 in their 10-lap race.
That action commences at 8:00h on August 29, and registration for that race will be closed five days prior to the race. The masters will have the option to choose which race they prefer to participate in on the day, whether the Open or Masters categories.
