Carpenter jailed for stealing client’s jewellery

A 44-year-old carpenter was on Tuesday jailed for three years by Magistrate Dylan Bess for stealing a quantity of gold from a women who hired him for a plumbing job.
Michael Hemsraj pleading guilty to the larceny from a dwelling house charge which stated that on April 28, the Virtual Complainant (VC) Coretta Norton contracted him to execute a plumbing job at her home.
The VC said she secured in her wardrobe several pieces of gold jewellery – one pair of gold earring valued ,000, four gold chains with a total value of 4,000 and one gold ring valued ,000, all to a total value of 6,000 and left the defendant in her home, as she ventured out to run other errands.
Upon her return, Norton said she sent the defendant to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to conduct some business on her behalf, but he never returned.
The VC said she became suspicion and conducted a search in her wardrobe, where she discovered the items missing. A report was made to the Police and Hemsraj was arrested on May 7.
When questioned, he admitted to selling the stolen items ‘under the clock’ at the Stabroek Market.
The defendant pleaded with the Magistrate to be lenient and requested time to repay the VC for the items stolen. His request was not granted and he was jailed for three years.
