The excitement of the 20th cycling memorial in honor of the late President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi B. Jagan will continue this Sunday when the top wheelsmen take to the starting line.
The first of the three races honoring the late president was held in the ancient county of Berbice and will now ride off from 08:00h at the Wales Police Station with riders proceeding to Bushy Park Parika and turn around to conclude at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, completiting a 50 mile journey.
Hamza Eastman who rides for Team Coco’s is the defending champion, winning the race in 2015 and currently the number one ranked cyclist in the senior category as Christopher Griffith won the junior division and Junior Niles won the Veterans category.
Eastman will be up for some grueling competition with a number of cyclists finding their form so far, particularly Linden Bauxite Flyers’ Shaquel Agard who has won the first leg of the event where the race commenced in New Amsterdam, proceeded to No. 55 Village, and returned to Port Mourant last Sunday.
Amongst those in contention for this event include Eastman’s club mates; Stephano “Sunny” Husbands who won the last Three-Stage meet in February as well as Jamaul John who has been exceptional.
It is expected that Team Evolution’s Paul deNobrega be a strong contender for the title due to his subliminal form since the year began. Also, young We Stand United Andrew Hicks has impressed since moving over to the Seniors Division, already securing a win in this group.
Evolution’s Raul Leal is one who is ear marked to make a return to the saddle and after speaking with this publication, Leal intends to make a comeback over the weekend following being sideline for over three months.
