CDC warns of flooding risk across Guyana this week

…as heavy rainfall to persist until May 15

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has warned that heavy rainfall over the coming days could result in flooding across several parts of Guyana, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained communities. In a statement on Monday, the CDC said the Hydrometeorological Service has forecast periods of rainfall from May 11 to 13, 2026, with a more significant increase in rainfall expected on May 14 and 15.
According to the agency, all regions are likely to be affected during the five-day period, with Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six identified among the areas most at risk. The CDC cautioned that the rainfall could lead to coastal flooding, drainage overflow, road inundation, agricultural flooding affecting crops and livestock, riverine flooding and possible isolation of some communities. Transportation delays, including disruptions to airstrips and trails, are also possible. Residents were urged to take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of flooding. The CDC advised persons to avoid flood-prone areas whenever possible and to exercise caution when driving or walking during periods of rainfall, especially in areas with pooling water. The Commission also encouraged citizens to clear drains, trenches and waterways, secure important documents and household items, prepare sandbags, and elevate furniture in lower flats where necessary. The CDC further urged the public to continue monitoring weather forecasts and official updates as conditions develop over the coming days.
