Cellphone thief jailed for 12 months

A fisherman was on Wednesday jailed for 12 months when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with robbery under arms.

Asid Mohammed, 31, of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, accepted that he robbed Dominic Etwaro and Daniel Gray.

He admitted to the charges which alleged that the he robbed Etwaro of one cellphone and other items; a total value of $64,000 and Gray of items with a total value of $29,000.

Police Prosecutor Simone Payne told the court that the two victims were relaxing at the Kingston seawall when they were approached by the defendant from behind.

He reportedly accosted the Virtual Complainant’s with a cutlass and proceeded to relieve them of their belongings.

An alarm was raised and the accused was apprehended by ranks as he attempted to escape with the stolen items on his person.

As such, the father of one was jailed for 12 months.
