A Joint Services operation at the Mazaruni Prison on Thursday morning unearthed several cellular phones and improvised weapons, among other contraband items.
The six-hour search exercise resulted in the discovery of four cellphones, five phone chargers, three USB cables, a memory card, 30 lighters, 15 smoking
utensils, six improvised weapons and several other items, the Guyana Police Force said in a brief statement on Thursday evening.
There were no reports of arrests.
Only last week, a 26-year-old Prison Officer attached to the New Amsterdam Prison was arrested after he was caught with 528 grams of cannabis and 20 packs of cigarettes at the facility.
