CG United Regional Super50 tournament: Eagles, Scorpions battle in final push today

In a virtual dead rubber, the Guyana Harpy Eagles are now facing a critical do-or-die situation with an outside chance of qualifying for the semifinals of the CG United Regional Super50 tournament.
Eagles will come up against reigning champions the Jamaica Scorpions at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy today. The Eagles are sitting in sixth position with 25 points, and this match is their last in the group stage. A loss will definitely decide their fate; but a convincing win, based on the new points system, could give them a chance of advancing.
However, it is a long shot, since their advancing would depend on the results of the other matches, as all teams except West Indies Academy have one more match to play.

Despite fielding a strong team on paper, the Eagles are yet to string together a comprehensive performance. It has been a one-man show in most matches, with Sherfane Rutherford (246 runs) and Tevin Imlach (203 runs) being the stand-out batsmen.
Kevin Sinclair has enjoyed stints of success with both bat and ball. He has accumulated 186 runs and has taken 11 wickets, tying with Gudakesh Motie for the most wickets taken by a Guyanese bowler.
It is evident that the spinners have done their job, with Veerasammy Permaul being the other successful bowler with nine wickets.
Guyana will be without Romario Shepherd, whose contributions as a fast-bowling all-rounder will be direly missed.
Eagles may still be hoping that the likes of Chandrapaul Hemraj, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shimron Hetmyer will come good, each having suffered a less-than-acceptable run in this season. With all to play for, the Eagles are expected to come out with all guns blazing.
Like the Eagles, Scorpions have all to play for, as they aim to break their jinx and register their first win of the season. After six matches, they are on just 7 points, and have no chance of qualifying.
Lack of preparation consistency has also plagued Scorpions, who came to the party practically venom-less. Chadwick Walton (200 runs), and Nkrumah Bonner with 179 runs and consecutive half-centuries in his last two innings, have fetched the batting line up, while no bowler has taken more than five wickets this season.
And Rovman Powell and Jermaine Blackwood have both failed to deliver inspiring performances, as have both Odean Smith and Fabien Allen.
Should Guyana fail to qualify, the Super50 title would have eluded them for 19 years.
