CG United Regional Super50 tournament: WI Academy school the Eagles
Youth had the better of experience yesterday at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground, as the supposedly experienced Guyana Harpy Eagles team were proverbially taken to school by the ‘young’ West Indies Academy team, and lost their encounter by a hefty 92 runs in the latest fixture of the CG United Regional Super50 tournament.
Having won the toss, the Academy opted to bat, and posted 263 all out in their 50 overs. As for the Harpy Eagles, they responded with a paltry 171 all out in 35.1 overs.
The Academy opened their innings with a horrid start, Kevin Sinclair removing Kimani Melius and Leonardo Julien in successive deliveries during his double-wicket maiden first over. He ended with figures of 2-36.
Teddy Bishop and Matthew Nandu, however, consolidated with a 54-run partnership for the third wicket. This partnership was eventually broken by Gudakesh Motie (2-39), who bowled Nandu for 15 runs. His 37-ball innings was highlighted by two boundaries.
Teddy Bishop made 48 runs from 46 balls as he hit eight boundaries before edging to Kevlon Anderson at first slip off the bowling of Motie. But this only laid the foundation for Matthew Forde and Nyeem Young to put on 59 runs for the eighth wicket.
Forde, who top-scored with 52 from 54 balls, punctuated his innings with two sixes and four fours, while Young contributed 42 from 44 balls. Both batsmen were dismissed by Shamar Joseph (2-59).
Joshua Bishop chipped in with 37, while Ackeem Auguste scored a 17-run cameo before being dismissed by Veerasammy Permaul (2-38).
Guyana’s chase was riddled with low scores, their batters again failing to acquit themselves as the young bowlers proved too much for them to handle, despite a decent opening partnership.
Anderson and Chandrapaul Hemraj posted 45 for the opening stand, with Anderson scoring 27 and Hemraj 16, before both were dismissed by Young (3-18).
Sinclair returned to hit a top score of 46 runs from 56 balls, which contained six fours and one six, before being trapped leg-before- wicket by his countryman Ashmead Nedd.
Permaul tried valiantly to save his side, but eventually fell for 32 runs after hitting five boundaries. Tevin Imlach was the only other batsman to hit a double-figure score, with 17.
Auguste was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-47 with his leg spin.
