CG United Regional Super50 tourney: Mohamed pilots Red Force to four-wicket win over WI Academy
Trinidad and Tobago Red Force got the better of the West Indies Academy yesterday, and they beat them by four wickets on the back of Jason Mohamed’s half-century in a match of the CG United Regional Super50 tournament played at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Academy won the toss and opted to bat first, posting a respectable 263 for eight in their 50 overs. The hosts then reached 264 for six with eight balls to spare.
Mohamed registered his 22nd half-century by reaching 70 not-out in 86 balls. His innings was highlighted by seven boundaries. The former West Indies batsman piloted the chase with Terrence Hinds, who made 23 not out, and they forged together an unbroken 72-run stand for the seventh wicket.
Mohamed also partnered with Akeal Hosein to put on 50 runs for the sixth wicket, before Hosein was caught at deep square leg for a well-put-together 31 from 25 balls.
The Red Force were able to finish their innings well, compliments of the efforts of Tion Webster, who added 50 runs for the second wicket alongside Joshua Da Silva (13), despite their losing Kjorn Ottley for 12 early on.
Webster defied the Academy bowlers to make 45 from 63 balls. He carved four fours and two sixes before holding out to Ackeem Auguste at long off, off of Kevin Wickham (2-54).
The Academy were sloppy in their bowling, gifting the Red Force 36 extras.
Earlier, when Academy batted, Auguste recorded his second List A half-century with a four through the covers off of Hosein, as he top-scored with 76 not-out. The former West Indies youth captain recorded his best List A score by hitting three sixes and six fours as he strung together a series of partnerships, including two 50-run stands: with Matthew Forde (28), who was caught at deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Terrance Hinds despite hitting him for two sixes and two fours in a 23-run over; and with Nyeem Young (13), who was trapped leg-before-wicket to Sunil Narine (2-33).
Auguste also shared in a 51-run partnership with Wickham, who made 31 from 54 balls before his innings ended via a sharp direct hit from Shannon Gabriel.
Additionally, Academy openers Matthew Nandu and Kimani Melius banded together to put on 59 for the opening wicket. Nandu toiled for his 40 runs, which came from 52 balls, while Melius made 29.
