Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) President Aleem Hussain said the club is gearing up to host possibly its biggest event when the two-day Shiv Chanderpaul Celebrity Open tees off on August 4 and 5.
Hussain, who teased the idea a few months ago, recently confirmed with Guyana Times Sport that the move was solid as the batting legend as well as owner of Windsor Estates, Danny Sawh have both signaled their intentions to make the event a massive success.
With golf being the secondary sport of most cricketers around the world, the celebrity tournament is expected to treat fans to a rare close up chance to see sports, music, television and fashion but more so popular cricketers up close and personal with possibilities playing a few holes with the personalities.
Hussain, CEO of NexGen Global Marketing, one of Guyana’s top sports promotion organizations; said Sawh who is also an avid golfer recently indicated his willingness to help build an 18 hole course here in Guyana in partnership with
Guyana/ex-West Indies batting great Shiv Chanderpaul is set to make headline with the golf club as he prepares to host his celebrity Open this summer
Hussain’s company.
He said that Sawh is also upbeat about having a top caliber player like Chanderpaul on board with the tournament as it will further help to rake in more top competitors.
Also, with Windsor Estates being a premier sponsor of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20, Hussain said Sawh was hopeful of attracting some of the star players who might be in Guyana around that time for the 2018 edition of the CPL, to possibly take part in the celebrity Open.
Speaking about the plans to make the tourney a remarkable one, Hussain said having both the Windies legend and one of the region’s premier sponsors of sport on board is great. More so, with cricket being the theme for the Open, he said having the best Guyanese/ West Indies batsman as the face of the tourney should further encourage a wider celebrity base of cricketers who indulge in golf as a pastime.
“Shiv Chanderpaul, a legend in cricket now has decided to put his amazing talents to work on the golf course. Shiv indicated that he was happy to be part of golfing in Guyana and he was very pleased at the great improvements he saw at the Golf Club compared to his last visit, a while ago”, said Hussain.
Hussain continued, “He gave his commitment to having a Celebrity Tournament in the next few months (August 2018), which would involve many great cricketers who also play golf. He assured those present that once that tournament is a success he would be mindful to have it become an annual feature of the LGC calendar of events”.
The LGC President also hailed the 43 year-old for his skill with the golf club as he participated in last weekend’s Kissoon Open. Hussain said the cricketer’s skill on the pitch was replicated on the Greens as he was impressed by the left-hander’s golfing abilities.
Meanwhile, the inaugural tournament which is set to host over 100 famous faces come this August has already been added as one of the main events on the yearly calendar of the LGC.
