Charity businesses warned of hiring underaged children

In observance of World Day against Child Labour, which was held on Wednesday last, scores of students from the Charity Secondary School participated in the Social Protection Ministry’s walk on Friday.
Those who participated in the walk were very vocal as they sent a strong message, chanting “Stop Child Labour” especially to the businessmen in the Charity commercial area.
Speaking at the event, Regional Labour Officer, Jason Narine stated that child labour is more evident in the Charity commercial area than any other part of the region. As such, he related that through his Ministry, target will be placed on those who employ underaged children since it is illegal and punishable by law.
On this note, he added that based on statistics, child labour is most prevalent in the Charity area and with the assistance of the Social Protection Ministry, it is the hope that it will stop.
“We want to have these children back in school so that they can qualify themselves and become better adults”, Narine stated.
Hundreds of students from the Charity Secondary School marched under the banner “Children Shouldn’t Work in Fields but on Dreams”.
Narine added that he is pleased with the exercise and hopes that a strong message is sent to those businesses that might be guilty of child labour.
