Charles, Mangru flatten Berbice

The Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Female Under-19 tournament began on Saturday with one of the scheduled matches at the Everest Cricket Club ground.
Following a washout of the opening match between Demerara and the GCB President’s XI in the morning, hosts demerara made hay while the sun shone to defeat defending champions Berbice by 15 runs in the afternoon.

Demerara won the toss and elected to bat first and made a descent 124 for 1 off their allotted 20 overs. Openers, Mandy Mangru and Casey Charles putting on an impressive 123 for the first wicket which ended when Mangru was run out in the final over for 41 (4×1). Charles finished on 60 not out with two fours and one six.
In reply, the champions failed to reach the required target after they were restricted to 109 for 9 when their 20 overs expired.
Shabika Gajnabi top scored with 29 and was supported by Sheneta Grimmond who made 24 runs but no other batter showed any fight to the home team’s bowling which was lead by Yogetta Balkishun with 3-27. Cherry Ann Fraser and Mangru bagged 2 wickets for 24 and 8 runs respectively to give wonderful support.
The final game of the tournament will be played today at the same venue, weather permitting when Demerara come up against the GCB President’s XI from 09:00h.
