Charlestown woman remanded for narcotics in bin

A 42-year-old woman of Sussex Street, Charlestown, Georgetown was charged and remanded to prison for trafficking over one pound of marijuana.

Yonette Bascom was arrested after Police swooped down on her premises and reportedly busted her with the illicit drug.

Bascom appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to the charge which stated that on June 5, 2017, she was in the possession of 470 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The accused denied any knowledge of the charge but the Prosecution nonetheless objected to bail considering the gravity of the offence and the penalty attached to such a crime.

The woman’s attorney argued that the narcotic was at no point in time discovered on the person of her client, further contending that the drug was found on the lot which accommodated two houses in an attempt to establish that the premises housed multiple occupants; any of whom could have been the legitimate owner of the said narcotics.

Reports are Bascom’s home was searched after Police ranks, who acting on information, visited her residence. She then allegedly granted permission to the officers’ request to conduct a search in her house which led to the discovery of a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, concealed in a black plastic bag in a bin.

Bascom returns to court on June 22.
