Chase Academy inflicted a 28-run loss on their opponents, North Georgetown Secondary School, in Saturday’s final of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB’s) National Secondary Schools Cricket League Georgetown Zone finals.
Batting first at the Everest Ground, Chase’s innings would have a number of useful starts. Dwain Dick hit two sixes and a four in his top-score of 25, while the likes of National player Sachin Singh (17), Orlando Giddings (19), and Tameshwar Permaul (18) added to the team’s 117.
It was a spirited performance from Shivanand Gossain, 3-11, and Wayne Bollers, 2-26, who were the premier wicket-takers for North Georgetown Secondary School.
The chase saw the North Georgetown batsmen faced with a gettable target; and although their side didn’t get the job done, much credit should be given to their batters, who applied themselves well but lacked the aggression needed to cross the finish line.
After openers Michael Pooran and Gossain both departed for 6 each, it was Bollers who provided a brief respite of hope with his counter-attacking. Bollers, who earlier starred with the ball in hand, returned to stroke 41 in a brave effort. However, the pace was not up to par with the required rate, as a few of the Chase bowlers managed to make inroads; thus curving the outcome of the game.
Afeilie Henry played a good supporting hand with 19, the next best score, but by the latter stages of the game the writing was on the wall, as Chase lifted another title.
Game two, which was contested following the Georgetown Zone Finals, saw Diamond stomping their authority in a 15-overs-a-side match versus Friendship. Batting first, Diamond amassed 146-7, thanks to national youth player Mavindra Dindyal.
Some 10 fours and four maximums littered the Everest ground as the youngster put on a one-man show to take his side to an easy 65-run win over its opponents. With the two finals now wrapped up, Chase now face-off with the East Coast Demerara zone winners in their next match.
