Chess returns to Berbice!

Good news for the Ancient County…

National Chess competition will return to Berbice today, Sunday, September 1, 2019, when the Berbice Chess Association (BCA) stages the A. Ally and Sons Open Rapid Chess competition, a one-day tournament that will be played at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) at Tain Settlement, Corentyne Berbice.

The anticipation is that all the top chess players in the country would participate. There will be seven rounds of competition using the Swiss System format, with each player being allotted 20 minutes per game.
Registration begins at 09:00 hrs, and play will commence at 10:00h. Cash, trophies and other incentives will be presented to the top players, all compliments of A. Ally and Sons, whose chain of stores has branches in Berbice and Demerara, and whose management is known for benevolence in a wide cross-section of activities.
Rubina Somwaru, a representative of A. Ally & Sons’ chain of stores, presented the sponsorship cheque for the tournament to President of the BCA, Krishnanand Raghunandan, and Vice President Steve Leung outside the company’s head office on Main Street and Coopers Lane in New Amsterdam Berbice on Wednesday last.
According to Mr. Raghunandan, the BCA had contacted Managing Director Fizal Ally concerning sponsorship for the tournament, and this was readily agreed.
