Woman sets house on fire are accusing paramour of cheating
A family of four is contemplating their next move after their home was set on fire by a woman who retaliated after finding out that her paramour is cheating.
Reports are the fire started at about 16:00h on Friday afternoon in the upper flat of the two-storey wooden and concrete structure, located at Lot 192 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
An occupant of the house, Sherwin Barrington, told Guyana Times that he was at home in the company of some work colleagues when the mother of his child arrived in a car.
Upon exiting, she accused that man infidelity and retaliated by gaining entry into the house thereafter, where she allegedly set it on fire. After committing the act, the woman calmly left the house.
Barrington explained that a neighbour noticed thick, black smoke billowing from
the upper flat of the house and as such, raised an alarm. He immediately rushed into the house and saw the mattress on fire.
When this publication arrived at the scene, onlookers crowded the street as firefighters contained the blaze to one location. While some household items were salvaged from the blaze, the entire upper flat was gutted, with the lower flat suffering water damage.
The neighbouring structure on the northern side received minor damage to its ceiling and the adjacent walls.
Divisional Operations Officer of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), Gregory Wickham explained that the house was already consumed in flames when the fire tenders
arrived at the scene.
“After we got the call, we got a response with four tenders; two from Water Street, one from West Ruimveldt and the other from Alberttown. On arrival, the first tender vehicle saw that the top floor of this apartment building was already engulfed but they managed to finally extinguish the flames,” the Divisional Operations Officer said.
He also hinted that a woman might have been responsible for starting the fire.
“The lead we’re following so far is one of the occupants of the building is saying that just prior to the fire, his child mother would have exited the building. That’s one of the leads that we’re following concerning this investigation,” said Wickham.
Guyana Times understands the suspected arsonist and Barrington have one child together. The family estimates their losses to be over $14 million.
