Children benefit from social cohesion camp in Region 6
“Two is better than one,” and “We cannot do it alone,” were two of the many phrases echoed by the social cohesion officer of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Shurla Scott, as she addressed close to 100 children at the Cumberland Primary School, East Canje, Berbice, on Thursday last.
The children were part of a one-week literacy camp, which aimed at improving the literacy standard of youths in the region.
Scott pointed out that the initiative is one which is being organised by the Canje chapter of the social cohesion ambassadors. Those ambassadors, she added, were trained at the Ministry’s Diversity, Education and Inclusion Workshop.
At the workshop, the participants were tasked to come up with projects which allowed them to exhibit their understanding of social cohesion. The regional social cohesion officer encouraged the members to work together since it will provide healthier communities, families and friends.
She also mentioned that as a unit they can accomplish anything.
“We are better together and there is strength in unity,” she said, while explaining the importance of having a good relationship.
“Social cohesion is nurturing individuals and community relationship, in building a unified Guyana,” she added.
Scott engaged the children in games which practically demonstrated ways in which activities can be accomplished when people work together.
She thanked the teachers and parents for their time dedicated, and their efforts made to be part of the training. The camp targeted children between the ages of four to 12.
