The competition was divided into Junior and Senior categories and saw the participation of 47 children between the ages 8 and 15. Participants were selected from 15 communities, as well as the Juvenile Holding Centre.

For each category, the spellers had to compete in two rounds – round 1 included words that were given to the spellers prior to the competition and the second round comprised of on-the-sport words.

In the junior category, the first prize was won by Indie Rampersaud, while the second spot was secured by Brian Renga and coming in third was Alesha Jackson. These children represented Albouystown, Tiger Bay and East Ruimveldt, respectively.

In the senior category, Shevon Leitch spelt her way to the top, while Megel Struge received the second place prize and Moses Grant came in third. They were selected from East Ruimveldt, Timehri, and Albouystown, respectively.

The children who secured places between 1 and 3 in the junior category were awarded trophies and $15,000, $10,000 and $5000, respectively.

The top three in the senior category were also rewarded with trophies, as well as $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000, respectively. The winners in both categories were also presented with Lenova Tablets donated by Starr Computer.

The event was chaired by Eumani Bourne, a Civilian Volunteer and was graced with the presence of A Division Commander, Clifton Hicken; Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus; Founder of the OZONE Foundation, Olive Gopaul; and Astell Collins of the President’s Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG).
